Encyclopedias explain that "it is believed that" he was an English knight of Warwickshire, who saw military service in France and spent many years in prison for political offenses and various "civic" crimes. Literary legend has it that he composed Le morte dArthur while imprisoned. It is known that it was published in 1485 by the first English printer, William Caxton. It is a compilation and translation from old French sources (with additions from English sources and the compilers own composition) of most of the tales about the legendary Arthur, king of the Britons, and his knights. One of the most remarkable pieces of Middle English prose, it consists of 21 books. Regardless of the details of its creation and the person, the work has survived for centuries and is still wonderfully alive and filled with passion and nostalgia. Malorys work has been one of the primary reasons that generations have treasured the stories of adventure and democracy as embodied by King Arthur and his knights of the round table.
