He has always been quick to tell people it was never his intention to be an entrepreneur but it was the only way he could get his magazine published and keep it going (Woopidoo, 2005; Linkage, Inc., 2004). He really wanted to be either a journalist or and editor (Linkage, Inc., 2004). This was a lesson learned very early in his life and one that led to his phenomenal success. Four years later, in 1970, he and Nike Powell established a mail order discount records store (Woopidoo, 2005). This was the first business under the name "Virgin" and two years later, the partners opened a retail store on Oxford Street and shortly thereafter they founded a new record label under the name of Virgin Records (Woopidoo, 2005). Their very first record under this new label, Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, was on the UK music charts for 247 weeks (Woopidoo, 2005). It did not take long for the new label to sign major artists, such as The Rolling Stones, Genesis and Culture Club (Woopidoo, 2005). Branson subsequently sold the label for US$1 billion to Thorn EMI (Woopidoo, 2005). In 1984, Branson founded Virgin Atlantic Airways (Woopidoo, 2005). In 1999, he founded Virgin Mobile and in that same year, published his book entitled, "Losing My Virginity: How Ive Survived, Had Fun, and Made a Fortune Doing Business My Way" (Woopidoo, 2005). While the Virgin brand is one of the most recognizable in the world, it is doubtful that the public really knows how many businesses Richard Branson actually owns.
