At the end of their spree, twelve students, one teacher, and both gunmen lay dead in the wake of a tragedy that shocked not only the community surrounding Columbine High, but the rest of the world as well (Hilliard http://www.thedailycamera.com/ shooting/28blawsu.html). In the aftermath of this tragedy, the grieving community of Littleton as well as a saddened nation at large faced the question that was posed by this incident - should the parents of the gunmen be held accountable for the crimes committed by their children? By overlooking the obvious evidence of brewing trouble that was found in plain sight in the gunmens homes after the incident, did the parents become accessories to the crimes carried out by their offspring? The student who argues that the advanced ages of the gunmen, each in very close proximity to an age where one is considered a full and legal adult, should absolve the parents of any guilt is a valid point and one with which many tend to agree. This student might also point out the fact that relationships between children of this age and their parents are commonly distant and unconnected and that this is a very normal stage of parent-child interaction in adolescence, which would also be another excellent point in favor of the parents. So a valid argument would be that parents are not responsible for the actions of their children when these children commit crimes, therefore should not be held accountable for these crimes.
