teenagers. In a perfect world, teens and pre-teens would wait until marriage before having sex. In a perfect world, we would not be bombarded with sexual images and icons. Obviously we do not live in a perfect world, and currently the average age for teenagers to start engaging in sex is fifteen. This clearly proves that abstinence only education in schools is simply unrealistic. We can no longer delude ourselves into thinking that just say no is an effective method of halting sexual activity among teens. Teenagers are not going to stop having sex, and why should they stop when it is projected at them from every angle and made to believe its the best way to be affectionate. Teenage sex is not a new phenomenon. People are arguing over what the curriculum should be in sex education: if it should be taught in schools or at home by parents. The main point of this paper is to discover if sex education is actually doing what it was set out to do; that is, it considers whether or not sex education in schools reduces the rate of teen pregnancy. Does it enlighten teens enough about sex and the consequences, to the point where you can actually tell the difference between those who are sexually educated and those who are not? The paper argues that sex education, no matter where it is taught, and no matter what program is used, should indeed help decrease the amount of teens having unsafe sex. Discussion Common sense would indicate that knowing about sex "should" decrease the rate of teen pregnancy.
