the inherent difficulties and challenges that face immigrants are great. One of the main obstacles in developing a strong language foundation is the fact that most of them are stranded within a community where their native tongue is the primary language, having the opportunity to speak English only during class time. "At this level, language is real intimidating. I do lots of hand-holding. The gratitude I get from these students is amazing. Its tough for them to be here. But they want to learn (Strauss, 1997, p. 09A). For foreign-born Unites States residents, the English language represents their very survival; therefore, it is pertinent that America not restricts itself as an English-only society. While some remain cloistered within the safety of their native-speaking communities, they will never fully assimilate to the American way of life. This will not only hamper their ability to live and work within the society, but it will also place a significant rift between their relatively small population and the rest of the American citizens. When one comes to live in a foreign country, it is expected that he learns all the customs of that new nation; to refuse to learn the native tongue is akin to saying one does not respect the local people enough to embrace their language. As of 1990, the U.S. Census reflected the fact that some fourteen million non-American residents have little or no English training (Strauss, 1997, p. 09A). For those who pride themselves on learning the English language, it becomes the most critical step to "economic and social survival" (Strauss, 1997, p. 09A).
