an honorable way in which he can feel pride in becoming a king in a changing world. It is the story of a son and his mother and the gender conflicts within. It is certainly a story of revenge, and a story of love and the search for ones identity. The following paper examines the final scene from Hamlet and discusses how it brings full circle the relationship between Hamlet and his mother, and also how the scene depicts the body politic of the play and of the time perhaps as well. Hamlet In the beginning of this play we see Hamlet eager and happy to reconnect with his mother. Many arguments exist that this play has incestuous undertones in relationship to Hamlet and his mother. But, putting that aside there is an obvious need for Hamlet to reconnect with his mother after the death of his father, her husband. But, Hamlet quickly begins to be angered by her and her actions as she has married her brother in law very quickly after the death of her husband. Hamlet finds this very distasteful and begins to alienate her. Then he learns, through the ghost of his father, that the new king, Hamlets new step-father, is responsible for the death of Hamlets father. Hamlet then starts to speculate about how much his mother was involved in this plot. Because of this possibility Hamlet mistrusts all women at this point, a mistrust that will lead to the suicide/death of Ophelia who is Hamlets love. Throughout this play Hamlet is torn as he tries to uncover the truth, feigning, and falling into, madness in order to know the truth.
