Crime and other social offenses are psychological in nature that often brings to bear an aspect of mental imbalance or distress officers must address in conjunction with apprehending the individual. As such, law enforcement officers receive considerably more than the standard few hours of special training in order to be prepared for dealing with issues related to race relations, domestic abuse and social work. This additional instruction allows them to diffuse situations that may otherwise end not only in the death of the mentally ill perpetrator but also the law enforcement officer. Indeed, modern day police face an entirely different approach to the very same job, given the fact that they are openly ostracized, disrespected and held accountable by the very people they risk their lives to protect. If they are not stepping between the pettiness of feuding neighbors or breaking up the illicit activity of twelve-year-old latchkey kids, then they are playing the role of welfare sympathizers in an already-overwrought social work system. The disposition of law enforcement officers, comprised of myriad characteristics derived from a combination of learned and innate traits, is an important aspect of how well they address their additional social work service.
