"There is perhaps no more important topic in [human resources management] than employee selection" (p. 184). Supermarkets face unique challenges in their hiring process. Employees must be able to work unusual hours, have certain minimum physical abilities in some positions, they need to have organizational and problem solving skills and they need to enjoy working with people. Some supermarket employees handle large sums of cash and all have access to vast amounts of inventory so they must be honest. There are numerous selection tools that can be used but they may differ according to the position being filled. For instance, hiring a butcher for the store is different than hiring a baker and both are different than hiring a cashier. Different knowledge, skills, talent, abilities and characteristics are needed for each position. The first tool for all positions is the application form that includes the biographical and background information allowed by law and which also includes references that will be checked. The second tool is comprehensive test that measures cognitive skills, honesty and personality. The third tool is a structured interview process. All three of these tools must be used for every position except bagger. A bagger needs to be trained in how to properly bag groceries with a smile. Anyone who is capable of lifting and carrying about 15 pounds and who is honest can be a bagger. There are a number of other tasks that must be completed before hiring at a supermarket. Given the access to money and inventory, there should be a background check for any criminal activity. Also, a drug test should be part of the process. References must also be checked personally and by phone rather than e-mail because the manager will have an opportunity to hear any hesitation and gain ...
