it is important to do so and how to do it. How to Secure Passwords This article is divided into logical sections. It begins with the why a person
needs a password, why they need a good password, how to choose a good password, and how to protect the password. Each section is informative and instructive. Beginning with a
reminder of how many passwords and personal identification numbers (PINs) we use in our daily lives. It seems we have PINs for everything from the ATMs to conduct financial
transactions to store credit cards (McDowell, Rafail & Hernan, 2009) to the security gate for our residences if we live in a gated community. We have passwords for many of
the sites we use on the Internet, such as e-mail accounts, databases, health insurance, our credit cards and banks. Further, we keep massive amounts of information on our computers. The
authors comment that it may not seem like a big deal for someone to hack into our e-mail but what if they get our social security and bank account numbers.
They say we need not just a password but a good password. Any password will help but those that are easy to crack like birthdays, family names, etc. are really
easy to get by. The authors comment that one obstacle to choosing good passwords is that are not as easy to remember but they will be harder to crack.
