Its difficult not to be attracted to tiny, bald babies with sweet faces, or cherubic toddlers as they attempt to take their first steps into the world. There is an appeal that small children have that is difficult to explain, but that impacts people of all ages and all walks of life. Yet the reality of the situation is that infants and toddlers can be frustrating beings as well, particularly to their parents. This is especially true of younger parents - just having been in childhood themselves, younger parents still have yet to become patient adults, meaning that they get impatient with their children. But one problem that besets all parents of toddlers and infants is that of communications. Communications skills in small children have yet to be developed - the are unable to articulate loneliness, frustration or fear. Its true that the way a baby cries determines hunger or sleepiness, yet until children develop the vocabulary and the way to connect words with feelings, communications with infants and toddlers can be frustrating. When communication is sporadic or unable to be understood by a parent or caregiver, behavioral and emotional problems could result in the infant or toddler. For example, its one thing for a toddler to throw a temper tantrum because he or she cant have an ice cream cone. But if a calm parent or caregiver distracts that toddler, the chances are good that the tantrum will end.
