We recount the history of mistakes made, opportunities to save that were narrowly missed and we shake our heads. "If only we had known about the concentration camps--we would have done something." The world now is so small now that the international community knows what is going on in every corner of the globe as it happens. So lack of knowledge is no longer an excuse in not taking a moral stand. However, the US and the richer members of the world community still pick their battles carefully. The international community will not come to the aid of just any country, whether it is morally imperative or not. A perfect example of the worlds lack of response is Rwanda. In April of 1994 unspeakable horror was being broadcast from Rwanda to the entire planet. Rows and rows of bodies floating face down in rainbow colors, looked more like a patchwork quilt than mothers, fathers and children -100,000 massacred in the first three weeks and day after day the world watched. Entreaties by the Secretary General of the United Nations to each country fell on deaf ears. Calling it a genocide then UN Secretary, General Boutros Boutros- Ghali angrily lashed out at the hand wringing. For weeks, he had pleaded with more than 30 heads of state but has managed to get firm pledges of men for a Rwandan peacekeeping force from only four African countries" (Michaels, 1994). The killing continued and the world watched. The dead rotted in the sun and clogged rivers, and stories came back of two-year-olds sitting among dead relatives for days.
