terms of human beings and everyday life, also has a social component that goes beyond providing for bodily needs and appeasing hunger, as eating is a "social activity that includes sharing, celebration, learning from one another, and providing for the helpless" (Wellman and Johnson, 2004, p. 6). At mid-life, the profile for the student researching this topic is very typical of contemporary American society, as he is 44, overweight with high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. This health condition is undoubtedly the result of the students liking for high calorie, high carbohydrate, high fat foods, such as spaghetti and pizza, and his dislike for salad and vegetables. Therefore, when writing his own essay, drawing from this research, this writer/tutor proposes that the student may wish to write something similar to the following example: Wellman and Johnson point out that at "midlife...controlling body weight and cardiovascular-disease risk factors...leads to better quality of life" (Wellman and Johnson, 2004, p. 6). This is a well-known fact but it is remarkably difficult to do within contemporary American culture. For example, where I live, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, eating Philly cheese-steak sandwiches, dripping with mayonnaise and melted cheddar (or is it Swiss or Provolone, the writer was not sure), is practically a requirement for citizenship. I enjoy watching sports and frequently get together with friends to watch Philadelphia teams play. This social/cultural practice usually involves beer, high calorie/high fat snacks such as chips and dip, and such foods as pizza or hamburgers. My religion, per se, does not typically have an impact on my daily nutrition. However, my church does not have potluck suppers periodically and my family usually attends.
