chance events.1 The plot of Mistys novel substantiates the validity of this assessment of the nature of life, as the characters lives are shaped by the forces that characterize Indian society in a seemingly random series of chance events. Each of the major characters copes with oppression, which is related to the Emergency, the period in the 1970s when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi suspended democratic rule and instituted martial law, but their oppression also has its roots in the culture and class system that defines Indian society. Dina, for example, as a woman was dominated by her brother, Nusswan, her closest male relative, after the death of her father due to the patriarchal traditions of Indian culture. Ishvar and his nephew Omprakash, known as "Om," are members of the Chamaar caste, which means they are considered untouchables, that is, members of the lowest caste. This is because member of the Chamaar caste are tanners and leather-workers. When Ishvar and brother Narayan, Oms father, were boys, their father endeavored to provide them with an escape from their low caste by apprenticing them as tailors to a man in another village.2 The hold of caste over Indian society is evident in the fact that this move caused friends of the family to fear for its consequences, as compliance with the caste system was considered to be absolutely essential and defiance of it was considered to result in severe retribution. Nevertheless, Ishvars father, Dukhi, was determined to help his sons escape the burden of poverty and outcast status that was rationalized as the just state for any member of their caste because of sins committed in past lives.
