The following paper examines this court case, along with the present day perspectives of "Jane Roe" (Norma McCorvey), and an examination of Simon Blackburns take on abortion in his book "Being Good." Roe v. Wade In the court case of Roe v. Wade Roe was a single woman and pregnant and she was essentially challenging the state of Texas and their constitution. She argued that her rights were being infringed upon. The court claimed "the abortion statutes void as vague and overbroadly infringing those plaintiffs Ninth and Fourteenth Amendment rights" (Touro Law Center, 2004). The ninth amendment essentially states that the state does not have the right to infringe on the rights of people. The fourteenth also argues for the rights of an individual. While there is more to the ruling and the case than this, this is the basis for the abortion freedoms experienced today. Simon Blackburn In Simon Blackburns book "Being Good" the author addresses many different ethics in the nation and the world and discusses abortion and issues relating to life itself. He states that, "A foetus is a potential person, certainly. But potential is a dangerous word" (Whole Lot of Quotes, 2004). He states that a flower of a particular color is a "sort" of flower and that an acorn is potentially a tree. He states, "My car is potential scrap, but it is not scrap, and its being potential scrap does not justify anybody in treating it as scrap" (Whole Lot of Quotes, 2004).
