New Hampshire and Vermont are scarcely New York City, electrified fences have taken the place of "mending walls," and tractors and mechanical balers have replaced work horses and hay wagons.
To some degree, the distinctive New England colloquialism of Frosts poems have disappeared as well, replaced by the bland, accentless speech we all learn from television. Nonetheless, the spirit of
rural New England has been preserved for posterity in these poems. They are colloquial in the true sense of the word: in Websters definition, they "belong to the words, phrases,
and idioms characteristic of conversation and informal writing"; they are "conversational" (Websters, 357). In Frosts poetry, we hear New England speak. Considering how very imbued with New England Frost is,
it is quite amazing to learn that he was born in San Francisco, and lived there until he was eleven years old. When his father died in 1885, the Frosts
moved to Lawrence, Massachusetts, where the young Robert graduated from high school. He attended college sporadically between odd jobs, working as a bobbin boy in a woolen mill, a shoemaker,
the editor of a rural newspaper, a farmer, and a school teacher. Certainly there was no sense that here was an up-and-coming young man. In 1912, when Frost was thirty-eight
years old, he decided to change his life. Selling his farm and quitting his job, he moved to England to pursue a career as a poet. While he was there,
he met several poets, the most well-known being Rupert Brooke. His new friends helped him publish his first two collections of poetry, and, when he returned to the United States
three years later, he returned as an established poet with a reputation. He immediately bought another farm and continued to live on one farm or another, in one part of
