music tells the story of King Shahryar, who was so wounded by the infidelity of his queen that he vowed he would marry a virgin every night and execute her in the morning before she had a chance to betray him. Scheherazade escapes his fate by weaving wondrous tales that so captivated the monarch that he allowed her to live to hear the end of each tale. After 1000 tales (and three children), Sheherazade had won his heart and the King rescinded his death decree. Scheherazades tales include many famous stories, such as those of Sinbad the Sailor. The portion of the Scheherazade Suite analyzed for this paper includes the "Marriage of King Shahryar and Scheherazade" and the story of "Sinbad and his Ship." The selection opens with a forte introduction that is only a few measures long. Brash and boastful, it sounds like the fanfare for royalty. This undoubtedly signals the presence of King Shahryar. However, after this brief opening, the music suddenly becomes pianissimo, so quiet that it reminds one of a storyteller whispering in the dark, slowly weaving a tale of magic, intrigue and adventure. This melody, Scheherazades theme, is played solely by the violins. The violin is said to be the instrument that most closely resembles the human voice. This similarity is emphasized by the use of staccato notes, which resemble a storyteller pausing or exclaiming over a point for emphasis. Suddenly the "royal" theme intrudes as if the King has asked a question or commented in some fashion. This "royal" theme has a great deal of percussion; however, the student researching this topic should note that I cannot be sure of this as the speakers on my computer have a very poor sound quality.
