10/2010 --properly! Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s "I Have a Dream" speech has, in the years since he delivered it, achieved
an almost mythic status, both for its cultural significance and influence in the civil rights movement, as well its excellent quality as a piece of rhetorical speech writing. The speech
is a highly effective one, affecting most people who hear it in some deep fashion. It can be difficult, in fact, to find someone who isnt familiar with the famous
refrain thats repeated throughout the speech, second perhaps only to Lincolns "Four score and seven years ago..." But what exactly makes Dr. Kings speech so effective? The answer is that
King, as a trained orator, employs a number of effective rhetorical devices throughout the course of the play, including deft and precise appeals to logos, ethos, and pathos, as well
as utilizing all rhetorical canons effectively. Here, the student quotes the required works and is helped to give a brief overview of the rhetorical context in which Kings speech will
be reviewed. Drawing from definitions offered by Joseph Tuman in his works on classical rhetoric, Kings speech can best be regarded as an issue framing speech, a speech specifically designed
to call attention to a certain social issue, both to the immediate audience of the speech, and those who hear it in the future (Tuman 2008, p. 45). In order
