Still, some of the behavior that emerged as a result of the Revolution, or events that came before it, are more characteristic of revolt. What is the difference between a revolution and a revolt? The storming of the Bastille marked the beginning of the French Revolution (McLeod, 1992). It is this Reign of Terror which is best remembered as being what the revolution was about. In fact, once that Bastille was stormed, drastic change would come about and that was the point at which the revolution started. However, in contemplating which particular activities led directly to the storming of the Bastille, that is another matter. The activities may be thought of as revolts. Revolts are a part and parcel of society. They signify that the people are unhappy and are expressing that unhappiness in a certain way. A revolt has the intent of altering society but not completely changing it. For example, in America, the Boston Tea Party may be thought of as a revolt, but the American Revolution would alter things significantly. It essentially served to create a new government. Similarly, in France, there would be drastic change as the people were fed up with the monarchy. They really wanted an enlightened monarchy and not a selfish one, but with little choice they forced the present monarchy out only to make way for a short but significant Napoleonic era. Just as there are different theories which suggest why the French Revolution occurred in the first place, there are different thoughts on just what instigated incidents that occurred before it. Some attribute the start of the Revolution to actions by Jacques Necker, the appointed minister of finance . ...
