There are a number of aspects of this study which make it particularly relevant in both a medical and a social context, not least the fact that it deals specifically with elderly patients within the health-care system. This is a social group which not only tends to be marginalized in terms of both research and resources, but which is constantly increasing in population. Greater longevity, coupled with changing social dynamics in which the elderly no longer occupy the same position in society as they did in previous generations, means that old people are all too frequently viewed as a burden on society rather than a potential asset. In the case of the elderly with chronic mental illness, the problem is even greater, especially as the nature of their illness often makes it unlikely that treatment will provide any significant degree of resolution. Mechan et al look at the issue from a pragmatic perspective, in their analysis of the effects of relocation on the elderly. They take into account, for instance, that elderly patients in the mental health care system are liable to demonstrate aberrant behaviours of various kinds, and that maintaining the most stable possible environment has been found to help alleviate the impact of such behaviours: it might be assumed, therefore, that relocation will automatically have the opposite effect. In addition, a balance needs to be established with regard to the needs of the patients and the availability of resources: in some cases the only option will be relocation and it is therefore worthwhile to conduct studies on the ramifications of this process so that the effects can be closely assessed.
