The second cinematic installment of J.R.R. Tolkiens masterpiece The Lord of the Rings is due to open in theaters over the 2002 holiday season. Tolkiens epic fantasy has been awarded top honors by consumers in Great Britain as the "greatest book of the twentieth century" (Byfield 2), and the success of the first film adaptation testifies, also, to the storys immense popularity. Those who do not see the appeal of Tolkiens achievement are mystified that adults could be so enthralled by fairies and trolls and other mythical creatures, and, on the surface, the narrative appears to be completely secular. However, a closer examination of the story line shows that The Lord of the Rings has a distinctly Christian orientation. As one critic states, The Lord of the Rings is a story "which only a Christian could have written" (Byfield 2). Consider the basic plot of the first movie. Hobbits are an invention of Tolkien. They love creature comforts, and live in snug, warm homes. They are shorter than human beings and have large, hairy feet. As this suggests, they are humble beings, not heroes. Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who is uncle to Frodo Baggins, entrusts his nephew with the awesome responsibility of returning a magical ring to the place where it was created, because it is only at the place of its creation can the ring be destroyed.
