the opportunity to escape her world of work and struggle in Ireland and find happiness and freedom in marriage in another country. This story follows her thoughts as she is thinking of what she will leave and what she will move towards, making the ultimate decision of whether she should leave or not. Within the story are elements of religion, which is not surprising considering she is Irish. The following paper illustrates how Eveline turns to religion and God when she is really at the peak fearfulness concerning her decision, illustrating the importance of religion and God in her life. Eveline and Religion In the beginning of the short story Eveline is essentially looking around her, in her home that she shares with her siblings and her father, really taking in the material things that have become a part of her life. She never envisioned she would realize she may miss how much a part of her this environment is and so she soaks it in. This is when the notion or subject of religion is introduced, allowing the reader to know that religion is a very important part of her life, even if she has not recognized it, much like the material possessions that surround her. In the examination of the house she realizes that "during all those years she had never found out the name of the priest whose yellowing photograph hung on the wall" or "the coloured print of the promises made to Blessed Margaret Mary Alacoque" (Joyce). Religion is not mentioned again, though God is, throughout the work. It simply sets the stage for understanding that religion is a very intricate part of her life and her identity.
