Year, or Samhain and the celebrations that have risen from it. This ritual has manifested itself through paratheatrical activity, in dramatic entertainment, in non-literary folk theatre and semi-literary folk theatre. Samhain, sometimes called the Celtic New Year, also goes by many names such as Third Harvest, All Hollows Eve, Day of the Dead, or Halloween. Samhain is considered to be one of the original fire festivals which celebrate the birth to death and renewal in a continuing cycle. This birth, death and renewal can be said to be universal themes in most dramas and stories, even today. Initially, paratheatrical rituals began to be used as a foundation for building theatrical performances. These theatre works were often comprised of music, dance, ritual repetition or sequence or a stage play. The elements could be all present, or just one at a time. The themes were usually those of birth, death and redemption, or something aligned along those ideas. For example, the story of a man on a journey (Such as Homers The Odyssey). Man on journey. Man lost on journey. Man find his way. This can be closely associated with the birth, death and resurrection idea. Interestingly enough, this age old idea of birth death and redemption is also deeply rooted in the Christian faith, though it can be stated that this idea came from much earlier roots in human civilization. English Ritual Drama pulls its roots, also, from the Celtic New Year, the old Sabbaths and holidays of the Celtic calendars. Those who first view mumming or English Ritual Drama will perhaps not understand the primitive rituals on which it is constructed.
