the shape of a horn, but were largely ornate and highly decorated. The rhyta in the shape of a pig, housed in the National Museum of Beirut, is a starling example of Rhyton and suggests it possible uses. The rhyton was commonly filled with wine or alcoholic drinks. It was constructed to be freestanding. The wine was poured from the top while the drinker held his thumb on the spout at the front of the animal depicted, then when the end is positioned the thumb is moved to release the liquid(Snodgrass 2000). This particular rhyton, with the head of a pig at the end, was of the freestanding variety and was constructed of terracotta(Natl Museum Beirut, 2003). One can tell a great deal about this particular piece. Experts date it at around the fifth century B.C. Sheikh(Natl Museum Beirut 2003). The place where this artifact was found was not Greece, but another country along the Mediterranean. However, because it is Grecian made this tells scholars that it must have been a part of the goods used and sold along the trade route. Scholars think that it is Grecian because it is the type of construction commonly called attic ware, which is the black glaze that one sees on this piece. Rhyton were generally very ornate and are thought by most experts to have been mostly for ritual ceremonies, or perhaps used by the very wealthy. Most Rhyta were made of pottery or metal and had a base shaped in the form of an animal. The significance of the animal determined what the rhyton, many times, would be used for.
