Discussion Islam, Christianity and Judaism are often referred to as the foundation faiths, since among them they have shaped much of the modern world. But can three distinct faiths find common ground that allows them to coexist peacefully? Yes, says Jacob Neusner, who argues that the three "have more in common than in contention" (2006). He notes that all three religions teach that "God is one, is unique, and is concerned with humanitys condition" (Neusner, 2006). In addition, the three bear a "unique relationship to one another" because they each "take up the narrative of the others," tell stories that are much the same, and in fact, tend to go "over much the same ground" (Neusner, 2006). Judaism focuses on the Hebrew Scriptures, which tell of the "one God who created man in his image, and of what happened then within the framework of Israel" (Neusner, 2006). Christianity essentially repeats the same story but interprets it differently and ends by illustrating the relations between God and man in the form of one mans life (Neusner, 2006). Islam too recaps many of the same concepts as the other two faiths: it "affirms the revelations of Judaism and then Christianity, but draws the story onward to yet another climax" (Neusner, 2006). Neusner says that its not possible to find any other three religions that share a narrative this intimately (2006). They all believe that "God is one and unique" and in addition, that he makes demands on humanity and the way we conduct our affairs (Neusner, 2006).
