The quality of healthcare differs according to a number of factors. The family nurse practice is impacted by a variety of considerations
which affect quality. The role of nurses in controlling quality is particularly critical in health care clinics with a high risk patient base such as that which exist in
areas of high drug, alcohol and tobacco use. The nurse practitioner must utilize methodologies which promote both patient and nurse accountability and quality.
The types and qualities of medical treatment which is provided in clinical situations across the nation vary widely. The implementation of appropriately designed and targeted quality assurance programs
in these settings is imperative. Health care management philosophies are integrally linked to the quality of the products a clinic provides. This product is of course the effective
diagnosis and treatment of patients. Across the nation a number of steps are being taken to ensure quality healthcare in the
clinical setting. The Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations has had a definitive impact on the quality of care being provided within the country (Messner, 1998).
In 1992, for example, this organization issued a mandate that all hospital chief executive officers become familiar with continuous quality improvement (CQI) (Messner, 1998). This in combination with patient
