What does a public relations specialist do and what is his or her role in a company? It is first important to understand that how a company presents itself to the public is vital for the continued success of that business. Advertising is one way a firm can enhance its image but many confuse the two disciplines. The key difference between advertising and public relations is that with advertising, the company has control over time and space but with PR, one does not have any control (Applegate 37). Essentially, public relations goals take more manipulation and are more difficult to accomplish. Much depends on the climate, the product, current events and the skills of the PR specialist. Does every company need public relations help? Just plugging along, selling or providing service, while presenting an unfavorable image to consumers will not allow a company to progress. It is only through excellent public relations with communities and clients that companies can grow and prosper. A public relations specialist can assist a company to enhance its image and make vital connections with consumers. To do this, he or she needs certain applicable skills.
