has hinged on benefits like Medicare and Social Security, two programs that help the elderly immensely. Although many people have their pension plans and so forth, if for any reason
they lose it by the time they reach the age of eligibility for these programs, they act as safeguards to get people through their latter years. Similarly, Medicaid allows the
poor to reap medical benefits where they would have otherwise not had access to the system. The social condition of the elderly would seem for all intents and purposes good.
They seem fine. The society takes care of them, stores provide discounts for those over the age of 65, and one imagines it is one big vacation. At the same
time, many of the elderly are depressed for a variety of reasons and so the social condition is not all that wonderful. Many elderly are ignored. For example, there are
many older alcoholics but people do not realize this. Klein & Jess (2002) report on alcohol abuse in nursing homes. Interestingly, alcoholism is often overlooked. Professionals chalk up alcoholic behavior
to being irreversible dementia (2002). On the home front, relatives may similarly think that grandma or grandpa are just old, lethargic, and forgetful. It can be a very serious problem
for the elderly who are often on a smorgasbord of necessary pills to treat a variety of conditions. Although the golden years are good for some, for others it means
loneliness and depression. Many will lose a spouse at some point, or will find that many of their friends have passed away. In todays society where people do not live
in the same town in which they were born, many elderly people do not see their children or grandchildren very often. The social condition of the elderly is of course
