The goal of the Gestalt therapist is to aid clients in restoring or establishing their own native ability to "self-regulate as an organism," which enables them to have successful and emotionally fulfilling contact with others in their environment (Kirchner, 2003). This ability enables the client to cope successfully with life events, both positive and negative. The focus of therapy is "HOW a person is creating his/her life...not WHY they came to be as they are" (Kirchner, 2003). Dysfunction is not perceived as a "mental disorder," but rather as a "loss of clear internal awareness" and "self-responsiveness" (Kirchner, 2003). Due to some deficits in this therapy, such as lack of a theory of human development, there are some psychologists who believe its applications are limited; while other say that Gestalt therapy is ideally suited to treating extreme psychosis (Kirchner, 2003). One aspect of Gestalt theory that is particularly appealing is that the clients subjective experience of reality and the meaning that the clients associates to his/her perspective is viewed in a non-judgmental way that is "void of the question of right or wrong, true or false" etc. (Kirchner, 2003). Since the Gestalt therapist limits this sort of interpretation, this facilitates meeting the needs of clients who have cultural backgrounds different from that of the therapist. This aspect of difference is discussed openly and through "open dialogue," the differences between client and therapist will serve to broaden the awareness of both parties regarding the "objective truth" (Kirchner, 2003).
