Not only was he successful in promoting the Gestalt perspective, but he single-handedly "provided a foundation form [upon] which humanistic and transpersonal psychology was built" (Association For Transpersonal Psychology, 2005). According to Perls, the very essence of Gestalt therapy is for the client to rise from the proverbial couch and "face the therapist on equal footing" (Association For Transpersonal Psychology, 2005); by remaining in the subordinate position, the client is not afforded the ability to rise beyond such imposed restrictions and observe his/her situation from a holistic perspective. Nowhere else is the therapist more a more integral component to successful treatment and rehabilitation than with Gestalt. Indeed, the hands-on approach is not an option; rather, its mandatory presence precludes the therapist from adopting a position of distance so prevalent in conventional theories. Counseling is an essential component that fuels the ultimate healing process; at its very core, the main goal behind Gestalt is to eliminate attitudes that foster and perpetuate unhealthy thoughts by focusing upon feelings and "a spiritual dimension" (Barker, 1998, p. 52). The one-dimensional approach of conventional, pre-Gestalt theories arguably did nothing to address the deeper, more concealed properties of the clients problems. In order to achieve this objective and truly be able to eradicate the core reasons, counseling must apply several six specific principles: 1. Awareness of sensations 2. Identification of need 3. Activation of energy 4. Action 5. Contact 6. Enjoyment of need satisfaction and withdrawal, leading to total balance (Anonymous, 1995, p. 1S).
