Under section 2.06 of the code of ethics the attraction may be seen as part of a personal problem that could interfere with performing their work. It is also possible that if the psychologists behavior is impacted there could be a breach of 3.02; sexual harassment, there is also the issue of section 3.05, this section deals with multiple relationships; which states "A psychologist refrains from entering into a multiple relationship if the multiple relationship could reasonably be expected to impair the psychologists objectivity, competence, or effectiveness in performing his or her functions as a psychologist, or otherwise risks exploitation or harm to the person with whom the professional relationship exists". It is stated that were this is not expected to be harmful the relationship is not unethical, judgment may be impaired in determining what might be harmful. There is also a danger there could develop an exploitative relationship under section 3.08. It could also lead to a conflict of interests under section 3.06. The dimension to the dilemma is to assess the potential level of the attraction and to what, it any extent, it will impact on performance. There are choices; this may include referring the student to a different psychologist, continuing treatment but adjusting the treatment so that there is no opportunity for impaired judgment to impact on treatment, such as moving toward group therapies, carrying on treatment with care self monitoring. The later of these may all impact on the quality of treatment (Brown and Lent, 2008), so the best solution is to refer the student to a different psychologist, if available. 2.
