who know how to read choose not to do so. There are many causes of aliteracy that come to mind. Yes, upbringing is important. Children exposed to the love of
books and learning will be more likely to carry the tradition on as they grow into adulthood. Other reasons go to the larger environment. Today, the global culture is
associated with electronic media and new ways of communicating. People message each other with "text speak" that ignore rules of spelling and grammar. They are also privy to new ways
of getting the news such as YouTube where they can watch snippets of news shows for example as opposed to reading a newspaper. Also, while reading the Internet is still
reading, people often scan the headlines and jump from one web page to another. In the end, they do not really get the benefits of sitting down and reading a
good book, for example. They receive bits of information as opposed to a whole thought, and the reading level is always low. The idea that people choose not to
read is evidenced by the vast number of people who claim they do not have time nor the inclination to read, but one reason some avoid reading is that they
are not good at it. Aliteracy that begins at early ages ends up harming the students overall reading ability. How is this possible? A web page devoted to aliteracy provides
