Prokaryotic cells are represented among single cell organisms such as bacteria and the blue green algae while eukaryotic cells are found in multicellular organisms. The simple organisms represented by eukaryotic cells, however, can have tremendous importance even to the most advanced of multicellular organisms. Even the strongest man, for example, can be brought to his knees by the simplest bacteria. This opens up tremendous possibilities for the genetic manipulation of these species. While this manipulation can sometimes be beneficial in regard to man, it can also take more negative forms such as occurs in biological warfare. Despite the basic differences in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, there are basic similarities as well. The cell is the basic building block of life. It contains the necessary elements to either function as an individual or will combine with other cells to form a tissue. The different tissues will specialize to form organs. The cell is the minimum unit which indicates the vital phenomena of life (Hickman, Hickman and Hickman 62). It contains a combination of organelles which are organized well enough to metabolize and replicate (Hickman, Hickman and Hickman 62). As is noted above, cells are divided into two major categories according to their internal anatomy, the prokaryon and the eukaryon (Arnett and Bazinet 53).
