Whatever the type of relaxation technique a person utilizes, the process of relaxing through an activity is related to an individuals sense of stress and stress relief. Television viewing, reading a book, and doing yoga are three very specific methods for relieving stress, allowing for relaxation. These three methods also use very different levels of physical participation, ranging from the passive activity of television viewing to the very physical activity of yoga. As a result, these activities have different impacts in terms of relaxation and stress relief for different people. Television viewing is a passive activity that many people use to "defuse" after long work days or long days of physical activity. Television viewing may be the most commonly used relaxation technique in the United States, and statistics suggest that children and adolescents view television for 3-4 hours each day, or 22-28 hours per week (Palmer, 2003). Many individuals use television as a means of getting out of their own lives, escaping into the fantasy of another experience, and this is how television viewing becomes a stress reliever. Reading a book is also a relaxation technique for many people. Often, people read before going to bed, allowing them time to unwind from the physical stressors of the day. Reading a book is not a completely passive activity like television viewing; individuals who read books as a stress reliever must enjoy reading and must find interesting reading materials in order for this to work as a relaxation technique.
