From commercials advertising "Sex in the City" to commercials for "Victorias Secrets" there are many commercials which seem inappropriate for television when families, or children may be watching. The following paper examines the reality and the problem associated with sexually oriented advertising on television. Problems with Sex in Advertising In first examining the reality and problem with sex in commercial advertising on television it is perhaps important to note how men and women are portrayed, something that is clearly a part of how children interpret sexual elements as well. For the most part it seems that commercials anymore depict most men as idiots. Men may be "lovable but not respected" in many cases (Social Class and Television, 2006). Women are, in such commercials, portrayed as intelligent and constantly busy. In another perspective, however, men are seen as the pursuer and women as the sexual object, a woman with little on her mind but getting a mans attention. Such perspectives, from the start, create a confusing sense of gender identity that can only further fuel the confusing nature of sexuality in terms of gender on television commercials. In essence, this is a serious problem wherein when sexuality is presented, obviously or subtly, on a commercial, young people and children will not be gaining any positive or educational perspective. This is a serious problem because as sexuality is a part of life and nature, it is not something that should be thrown at children in a way that is unreal, lacking in education, or confusing.
