way of looking at an issue or problem where there is the potential for many existing perceptions and assumptions of common knowledge which may create bias in the research and may hinder the research process and is driven by critical thinking (McCutchen, 1996, p.187). The process was used in an organization where there were performance issues, such as low levels of motivation which are traditionally associated with bad employment relationships and problems such as low productivity and high attrition rates. Traditional knowledge indicates this is related to motivation levels. Much of the literature which deals with employee relations is based on ideas seen with the work of Mayo, where motivation was found to reflect the employment relationship; where employees feel they are important to the employer and that the employer cares they appear to be more motivated compared to employees who do not have the same feelings regarding their relationship with their employer (Buchanan and Huczynski, 2010, p270). This can still be seen as forming the foundation of many studies on motivation. However, it is with critical thinking that these ideas have been extended and expanded with increased depth and breadth resulting from subsequent research. This indicates that even with established knowledge that is widely accepted there is value is examining and reframing the associated questions so that more knowledge may be gained. Gallagher states that problematizing is "the process of grasping an assumption, that is, a taken-for-granted way of thinking, and turning it into a question" (1999, p.70). Yu and Lee (2009, p.260) argue that problematizing will also facilitate the ability of a researcher to take a multidimensional approach as it allows for an appreciation of subjectivization.
