The so-called "right to die" has been a hotly-debated topic in America since the case of Karen Ann Quinlan in 1975. Many people have heard of the term euthanasia, and have heard of people like Dr. Jack Kevorkian, a.k.a. "Doctor Death," but what is its true definition? In Greek, euthanasia means good death. However, it has been translated by the religious right as legalized murder, a contention based largely on the rather controversial activities of Dr. Kevorkian. Some members of the medical establishment contend that Dr. Kevorkian is doing little to popularize the cause of mercy death, because his recent (and questionable) assisted suicides are clearly "pushing the envelope" (Bradt, 1997, euthanasia.html). However, Kevorkians actions, at least according to his attorney, Michael Schwartz, are not those of a dangerous publicity seeker, but rather, of a compassionate physician committed to the easing of human suffering: "This is a case of medicine. It is a situation where the object was to alleviate the pain and suffering for patients who wish to have that pain and suffering put to an end" ("Killing as Caring," 1998, killing.html). Attorney Schwartz is, perhaps, oversimplifying the case of euthanasia, as it is also a case of ethical consideration and of the human conscience. The issue has been around since the days of Hippocrates, and with the increasing number of elderly and infirmed citizens, it is time to distinguish between fiction and fiction so that the many myths surrounding euthanasia may finally be exposed once and for all.
