institutes today. When so many privileges as well as rights are being taken away it is an issue that is desperately in need of attention. Some of the concerns are in regards to: conjugal visitation, family visitation, weight machines, cable television, computer access, available education, and access to libraries within the prison system. Some of these programs may seem like nothing more than over indulgence or a down right luxury. After all arent prisoners confined within the prison system so that they can be properly punished for their crimes? They certainly werent sent there to enjoy themselves. Society hopes that they will be rehabilitated although society in general holds no hope for such an occurrence. Some may argue that such privileges as weight machines help control a prisoners pent-up rage and may lessen the urge to seek out sexual or violent release of negative emotions on fellow cell-mates or even the correctional officers. This may be true but there are also possibly better more constructive ways to eliminate these possibilities. If a prison system is concerned with saving money and actually portraying an environment of punishment and rehabilitation than weight machines can easily be considered a luxury, not a right. Television and Internet access are another issue. Why should a prisoner be given the right to television? And with the arrival of the Internet this is by far the last thing the general population of a prison should have access too. Perhaps in unique circumstances in job training the notion of computers and Internet access are acceptable ideas. But generally speaking these are luxuries. ...
