a joint structure is the knee joint, which involves muscle, bone, tendons, ligaments and integumentary structures in order to function. Though the primary organ system assessed in this example of movement across a joint is the muscular system, the skeletal system is also of primary significance when assessing the competence of structures in the joint movement. Structures and Functions of the Primary Organ System The Muscular System can be assessed in terms of three specific types of muscles, cardiac, smooth and skeletal. . Skeletal muscles are viewed as single organs, and include the muscle tissue, the vascular tissue or blood vessels feeding the organ, the connective tissue and the nerve tissue (The Muscular System, 1996). Skeletal muscles vary significantly depending on their position, function and the range of movements they control and the varying shape and size reference different ways in which muscle fibers are arranged (The Muscular System, 1996). (The Muscular System, 1996) The structure of each muscle organ is comprised of skeletal muscle fibers, which are cylindrical cells. These cells are grouped together and covered with connective tissue (Muscular System, 2005). The following diagram shows the muscle cell composition and the presence of the different structures: (Muscular System, 2005) The function of skeletal muscles are to move bone. Joints are far more complex than average bone and muscular structures in that they generally move in a variety of ways. The knee joint, for example, is not a simple hinge joint like the finger, but instead is a joint that has a range of motion.
