Thesis statement: SCANS skills should be incorporated into multi-discipline lesson plans. SCANS At the turn of the century basic work skills acquired a new label. They are now referred to as SCANS (after the Secretary of Labors Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills). Certainly there are going to be specified needs in most employment siituations, but the Department of Labor is now, equally interested in stressing the generalities that are considered necessary in employment. They are looking for those workers who "can cooperate on teams, allocate time and resources, process and evaluate information, understand organizational systems, and apply technology to their work" (http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/ETI/ jobs/guide12.htm). While for some, those may seem to be "common sense" skills; those are the "employment virtues," which most employers seek. Correspondingly, an education program, which is planned for either a school setting, a private counseling session, or a labor office training session, should incorporate these skills. These broad-based skills may be incorporated in lesson plans, role-playing, or written assignments. It is helpful to assist the student is seeing how these skills can be translated from a non-work environment, into the work scene.
