Intention can vary, of course, both between major cultural groups and between sub-cultural groups. Thomas (91) points out that within any one culture there are often numerous subcultures defined
by regional, ethnic, political, and class differences. Thomas contends that these differences are as much a diversity of pragmatic norms as they are linguistic variation. Thomas (91) defines
"cross-cultural" in this sense as being both: "native-non-native interactions" and ""any communication between two people
who-in any particular domain, do not share a common linguistic or cultural background". A speakers
level of knowledge, a level of knowledge including grammatical and psycholingistic factors, combines with their social competence to affect cross-cultural interactions. A speakers intonation, phonology, syntax, semantics and numerous
other aspects of their presentation combine with what Thomas (92) refers to as pragmatic competence to influence our perception of what they are saying. This phenomena encompasses economic, judicial,
moral, mythological, and aesthetic components. These components are social in their nature, not biological, yet they influence practically every aspect of human existence. Factors such as race, gender,
and sociopolitical status, are all social facts and each influences a cultures language. Pragmatic competence, Johnson (92) clarifies is our ability
not just to use language to achieve a desired goal or purpose but also to understand what is being said within the context of what is influencing the speaker.
