                                                    There are a number of socio-economic changes which have taken place in Vietnam in the past thirty years, some of which are a direct result  
                                                
                                                    of the war with the US and others which have arisen indirectly out of the situation in which the country found itself in the aftermath of the conflict. For example,  
                                                
                                                    the way in which the campaign was fought had a devastating effect on the physical structure of the country.  
                                                
                                                    Because of the difficulties which American troops encountered when trying to engage the Vietnamese guerrilla forces in  
                                                
                                                    combat, drastic measures were required to try and drive the Vietnamese out of their strongholds in the countryside. A policy of mass deforestation was employed, which did not succeed in  
                                                
                                                    flushing out the majority of the Vietnamese troops but did do serious damage to the local ecological systems.
