Theoretically, there are many influences within an organization, both political and from the leadership that this will impact on the way that the organization operates, with both these areas of consideration being subject to study and the emergence of theories. With this level of acceptance one may be left to consider whether or not the theories can be seen as accurate and may be observed in practice. To consider this the way in which political influences and leadership practice compare to theory the paper will look at the an example of a company, in this case a branch of a fast food chain1 McDonalds. The concept of politics is present in all aspects of everyday life, Aristotle argued that the nature of man was political, and as such it would be present in every type of social interaction, and influence decision-making (Collinson, 2006). There are many empirical studies that indicate the presence of organizational politics within the workplace (Pfeffer, 1992, Mintzberg et al., 2003). When examining the concept of organizational politics the value of understanding the potential impact in the workplace is by examining the way that it can interfere with the normal organizational processes, such as recruitment, promotion, rewards and general decision-making and how it may damage as well as enhance the overall performance of the organization (Huczynski and Buchanan, 2007). There is a great deal of evidence that organizational politics will have a direct influence, Ferris (et al., 1996) has identified the potential of negative outcomes related to stress and attitude where political manoeuvring is observed.
