As has often been the case in the past decade or so, a great deal of campaigning turns ugly with one candidate pointing out all the faults or focusing on all the possible negative qualities of another candidate in order to win their own election. This is something that affects everyone, and although many people feel that voting in such an election is not as important as the presidential elections, the point is that it is important because it sets the stage, and runs the show so to speak, in relationship to the country. With that in mind the following paper examines two local races of this particular writer/researcher as it involves the race for governor and the race for Congress. The candidates for governor are Bill Richardson (current governor) and John Dendahl. The candidates for Congress, US Representative in New Mexicos 1st Congressional District, are Heather Wilson (current representative) and Patricia Madrid. The information provided, though applying to New Mexico, is also illustrative of how everyones particular city, county, or state is likely experiencing the same conditions at this time. And, it is an important issue that people need to pay attention to, looking at candidates and smear campaigns, in combination with what the candidates have done, good or bad. In the examination Bill Richardson stands as the most noble and effective candidate, avoiding smear campaigns and letting his actions speak.
