particularly after 9/11. Officers are also often stationed at schools. In fact, many schools allow local police to work during the school day in order to provide a sense of
security and also to administer DARE programs. Of course, officers play many roles in the community. The stereotypical "beat cop" gets to know the local people, helps them with
various things, and counsels those who get into trouble. The local officer has a job to do but as a member of the community is more likely to come through
in a variety of ways. And while there is community policing, and respect for officers, there are other areas that are fraught with crime and where police are constantly in
danger. It pays to note that police officers play different roles in their positions as officers of the law. Sometimes they do act as counselors and psychologists as they
talk someone down from a bridge that is about to commit suicide, or they counsel a teenager who has a drug problem. There are other times when they appear to
be "knights in shining amour" as they find a missing child who merely fell asleep in the backyard or rescues a kitten from a tree. Yet, they are most known
for fighting crime and risking their lives. They are pit against the likes of drug dealers and hit men who have no scruples about killing. Even when off the clock,
the officer is required to act and react in dangerous situations when civilians would just be able to run away. There is never a time when the officer is truly
