government is run to the truth behind men and women. In light of such realities it comes as no surprise to note that he also had opinions regarding the arts. He discussed poetry, artistry, music, and many other fields of the arts, relating them to the condition of man but also presenting the reader with an understanding of what the arts meant to Plato. Bearing that in mind the following paper examines two of his dialogues, Republic and Symposium, discussing his opinion of the arts. It should be noted that these are only two of his numerous dialogues, and only two works wherein he discusses the arts. As such it should be understood that the examination is not an inclusive discussion of Platos entire view concerning the art. Republic In the Republic it is quite obvious that Plato is considering the system of a government and the people who run the government. But, he is also considering the people that make up the society as a whole, those people who are part of the society and perhaps necessary to create a society. As such he discusses art and artists, stating that "the lover of art and music who has all the experiences of youthful life. He is full of quickness and penetration, piercing easily below the clumsy platitudes of Thrasymachus to the real difficulty; he turns out to the light the seamy side of human life, and yet does not lose faith in the just and true" (Plato NA). In this we see that Plato appears to be indicating that the lover of the arts, and thus the arts themselves, are fields of society that truly speak of a sort of heightened awareness.
