Physical fitness is the product of two factors other than our genetic makeup and our environment. These factors are nutrition and exercise. Weight, in turn, is affected these factors as well. The equation that results is, in fact, somewhat simplistic. Despite this fact, many still remain mystified about how to maintain optimum physical fitness and weight. The purpose of this paper is to cut through that mystery. Physical inactivity and improper diet are the most often identified causes of obesity but an number of other factors are at play as well. Genetics, social environment, psychological factors and even economics are all recognized contributors to obesity. In most cases, however, obese individuals consume more food than their bodies require to maintain a normal weight. The weight gain which occurs can either be gradual or radical. The literature reports that in order estimate the calories needed per day in order to maintain weight can be calculated by using the formula of seventeen to twenty-six calories per pound of body weight depending on activity level (Applegate, 1994). One pound of body weight is the equivalent of 3500 calories (The Fitness Club, 2001). The individual who consumes more calories than they need to maintain their ideal body weight, therefore, gains weight at a rate of one pound per excess 3500 calories consumed. The level of activity is a critical factor in this relationship. In order to lose weight, therefore, obese individuals must abide by a relatively simply formula. A calorie deficit must be created.
