Rineke Dijkstra Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra favors creating a series of individual portraits that portray people at a transitional point in their lives and "Beach" portraits focuses on portraits of pre-adolescents who are all standing against the backdrop provided by sand and surf (Jaeger, 2008). The simplicity of this setting, which is virtually monochromatic, as the surf and sky are the same pale blue, focuses the viewers attention on the subject or subjects. As indicated in a 2002 edition of her work, the subjects in her beach portraits are "Tall, skinny, short, round, squat, awkward, slouched, tanned, bashful and sometimes unknowingly beautiful" ("Rineke," 2012). As indicated in the photo that accompanies the Jaeger article, the young boys lined up lined up in front of the surf are all in crystal-clear focus and touchingly vulnerable. The two tallest boys are on the outside of the lineup, which provides a sense of balance. Some look defiant, such as the tan boy standing on the outside left, with one leg cocked. Others look scared, such as the blond-haired boy who is third from the left, standing straight, at attention, with hands by his sides. The boys in the middle are staggered in height, which adds interest, compelling the viewer to examine each one. Most of the collection is of individual subjects who are frontally posed and photographed straight on, which, when considered as a group, presents a "cold, quasi-scientific categorization reminiscent of the work of August Sander ...
