paper examines phobias, the causes of phobias, how one can get over a phobia, and what phobias can teach an individual about themselves. Phobias In first examining phobias
it is perhaps important to understand exactly what a phobia is. According to many it is actually a form of an anxiety disorder, meaning that it gives the individual a
great deal of stress which can lead to an increase in ones heart rate and five one the desire to flee a situation. One author notes, "It is a strong,
irrational fear of something that poses little or no actual danger" (Medline Plus, 2007). One could fear high places, closed in places, spiders, elevators, airplanes, water, animals, blood, tunnels or
almost anything one could imagine. One author notes that there are actually two defined forms of phobias. "The first is social phobia. The second is a group called the specific
phobias" (Baptist Memorial Health Care, 2007). As would be imagined, a social phobia is a fear related to social situations, or being out in public. Specific phobias are the ones
most people are familiar with such as fear of particular things. While being afraid of some things is normal, such as the fear of "passing a growling dog on
the street, or hearing a huge clap of thunder" the reality of a phobia is that it involves irrational fear that ultimately stops a person from engaging in one sort
of activity or another, or an irrational fear that consumes the individual, consuming their thoughts and actions in many degrees (Sherman, 2007). A person will continuously be afraid of such
