To be Jewish is to have ones identity grounded within the context of ones ancestry, as it is rather like citizenship within a religion, rather than simply following a religions moral and belief dictates. As a Jew, the following discussion of Jewish identity, what it means to me and how I perceive Jewish identity as interpreted by others, is written from a personal perspective and encompasses the various societal factors that have influenced my sense of Jewish identity thus far in life, that is, the historical, legal, cultural and social elements that have created my identity as a Jew. Judaism is one of the worlds major religions and the first major religion to teach a belief in one God. My personal history with Jewish identity began at birth, as I was born into a Jewish family. At this point, my advice is to describe your family a little more. Is your mother Jewish? Are you Orthodox, Reform, etc.? Your discussion might be similar to this: As my mom is a typical conservative Jew, I am Jewish as well. To be legally Jewish, a persons mother has to be Jewish or else, the individual has converted to Judaism. As a small child, I knew I was Jewish, so I really do not remember when this identity was established or how. I did not think about it till I entered school. Being Jewish was just part of the fabric of my life. However, at school, I began to realize that not everyone was Jewish, that I was therefore "different."
