I understand how her situation is a combination of social, cultural and environmental factors when it comes to dietary choices, since in our family background it is common to have too many carbohydrates (beans, tortillas) and high calorie foods (a lot of fried and fatty foods) instead more fresh fruits, vegetables and better types of protein. Not only does she have depression because of her poor eating habits, but she also has type 2 diabetes, which makes me very concerned about her quality of life. I am also concerned about my health since obesity and depression are hereditary. The role food plays in both the prevention and management of diabetes cannot be stressed enough. Diabetics like my mother who do not follow a strict diet only ask for further complications, since their bodies have already endured a lot of damage from poor eating choices. If my mother would eat the right types of food, she would be able to control her blood sugar level but instead she continues to eat high carbohydrate and high fat foods that add to her unhealthy conditions.
